Today I’m talking to you if you’ve got an elderly relative or loved one that’s in a care setting or lives by themselves. That’s because over the next couple of weeks and months it may be that you have to step in and provide some caring duties.
In anticipation and planning for that there’s a few things you can do now. You can talk with your family and the friends of that individual around how you’re going to support that elderly person if for instance the care that they need is no longer available and provided or if indeed they need additional care and support.
Some of those considerations should be around:
- Do I have the right equipment in place to support that individual?
- Do I have the right protective materials like gloves and aprons to minimise infection?
- Do I know their doctor’s details?
- Do I know about the medication that this individual takes and when they take it?
- Is the home that you live in, if that individual might come to stay with you for a period of time, safe and fit for purpose to support that individual? (More information on how to make the home safe for elderly people can be found here).
